Now that classes the joint up a bit.

Round 2 or Snake Oil?
Today was an eight mile run. Afterwards we had breakfast at "Alicia's", a favorite of mine. I love the "Skinny Minny", an english muffin served open faced with scrambled egg, fresh spinach, tomato, onion, and dijon mustard....so yummy. Served with a fresh fruit salad of honey dew, cantaloupe, strawberries, blueberries and blackberries, mmm, .....food heaven.
She has a gift boutique adjacent to the restaurant that I am always compelled to peruse (love to look at the pretties!). There are small stones or river rocks in the sink in the ladies room. Every time I wash my hands I think I should put these stones in my bathroom sink. Then the thought promptly vanishes until I'm back at Alicia's.
This morning while washing my hands and thinking "I should put these stones in my sink", I had a flashback. To my sink. Instead of pretty "spa like" river rocks, I have the pump dispenser from my hand lotion thrown in my sink. Three days ago when I depressed the pump no lotion spewed forth. So of course I depressed it over and over expecting a different result and not getting one. Finally I came to the conclusion that it must be almost empty. So I took the pump out, put it in the sink and got a container to place the upturned empty bottle of lotion in. Really? What am I gonna get out of there? One more application? Geeze, tomorrow I'm going to throw it away. And I just might put those rocks in the sink.....but maybe they won't be so pretty in a sink where one brushes their teeth. Spitting toothpaste onto the rocks might just make it not so pretty and "spa like".
Driving home after the run and yummy breakfast I kept thinking "man I feel good, I feel so good I want to run some more". This really surprises me because last week we did a 14 mile run. At about mile 9 I started to feel really tired, and my calves started cramping at about 12 and a half miles. Those "zombie hands reaching up from the ground and grabbing my calf" kind of cramps. I ended up cutting that run short, I stopped at about 13.5 miles and walked the last half a mile.
The only other time I've had an issue with cramping was in Napa towards the end of the half. Now here it is less than 3 months later and I'm getting them again. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's just a hydration issue.
I've been feeling fatigued lately and can't really pin point why. I've started going to bed earlier and earlier hoping that maybe I just need to catch up on my sleep. But have still been feeling tired and my runs lately have just felt like such a chore. Even blogging seems like work (which explains why my posts are getting further and further apart).
I did the Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure a few weeks ago (I'll post more about that race separately) and received tons of swaggle. One of the items was a "Power Balance" necklace. I almost bought one of the bracelets in February at the Surf City Expo, but when the guy told me that one of his co-workers put one on his dog and the dog was cured of it's arthritis.....well, he talked himself right out of the sale. A banner flashed in my brain.....
So when I got the freebie I was a little excited, cause now I get to try it on my own for free. Being a major skeptic, I was a little apprehensive of the placebo effect. I decided to just put it on and forget about it. I definitely do not think about it while I'm running. In fact this morning after our run someone asks pointing to my neck "what is that? A heart monitor?" I look down and say, oh, it's my head phones and pull them out of my shirt. "No that other thing." Huh? Oh, and then I see it, the necklace, hmmm, interesting, cause I felt strong running today. I hadn't worn the necklace for a week or so (maybe those sucky runs lately?), but today, I had a good run. So good in fact that on the drive home I had to resist the urge to park the car and run home.
It's either the necklace workin it's magic. Or....it could be that after doing a 13.5 mile run with a half mile walk last Saturday, makes an 8 mile run a piece of cake.

What Is Wrong With This Toilet Paper?
My poor neglected blog.....like an old abandoned diary.
Ok, enough groveling, Blogger doesn't care how often I post. It will be here, patiently waiting for me to return.
I have neglected blogging, but I haven't neglected running. Last night's run was 4.94 miles. We were running at the trail, I stopped half way through the run to use the restroom (hard to run when you gotta pee). It's a park bathroom, there are no stalls, it's a one person room. I had to wait for another runner, when she came out she held the door open for me and said "It's dark in there". She was right, it was dark in there, I looked for the light switch, all I saw was a flat plate, no little toggle switch for me to flip up and "let there be light". No worries, I've peed in the dark before. Because it's dark I can't really see if the seat is clean or not....and there isn't a paper seat protector in sight, so hover I will. As I try to unroll some toilet paper, nothing comes off the roll, it just spins around and I can't find an end.....it's dark, I'm hovering, and the TP roll is just spinning and spinning. I try spinning it the other way, where's the end? over or under? It's too dark to see. I keep trying to pinch it to get it to separate from the roll. All I manage to do is pinch a little piece off, over and over again, I end up with confetti TP. I still can't see where the end of it is. I try digging my fingernail across the roll to rip it into submission. I pull at the liberated edge, and still end up with confetti! WTF? My legs begin to cramp from hovering so long. The TP wins, I will use the confetti.
Quick wash of the hands, there isn't a paper towel present to dry my hands on, unlock the door, push it open and it doesn't budge. Hmmm....flip the lock again, push, and still won't open. What kind of hell hole is this and how do I get out of it? Flip the lock again, push, flip it the other way, push, why isn't it opening? I push with my entire body (trying not to touch too much of my body with the door, cause you know, it's dark and I don't know how clean the door is) and still it doesn't give. WTF?
OOOHHHHHH
Maybe I need to pull.
I exit with my head down, not wanting to make eye contact with anyone who might of heard me struggling to escape. At least I didn't start screaming "Help, help, get me outta here".
Time to long in the miles. Since my last calculations I've logged in 72.02 miles, add those to the previous 60.49 for a total of 132.51, leaves a balance for my 1,000 mile journey of 867.49.
Disclaimer: Triple Dipping Ahead
3.1 of those miles are race mile. for a total tally of 40.46, with 9.54 race miles left to run, piece of cake! This race was at Wild Rivers Water Park in Irvine. Here's the triple dip....I was not officially registered for this race, I used a friend's bib. Thing #21, ran a race without being officially registered. I was averaging under a 12 minute mile for most of the race. Towards the end you get to run/wade in the lazy lagoon. Was nice and refreshing, but hard to run in, it really messed with my time, but was definitely a fun run. Best part was hanging out with running buddies afterwards.
Tally of race miles completed: 40.46, with 9.54 race miles left to run, piece of cake!

Honey Badger? Or Why its so hard being me.....
T sent me an email today saying at work they have a volley ball team, and they've decided to call themselves the "Honey Badgers". Said they are talking about wearing shirts that have a badger on it, so she was looking online and found this one:

So she emailed it to everyone and gradually hears people start cracking up and saying "OMG, that's the one!".
So here's why its so hard to be me.......
I can't just read the email, look at the picture and leave it at that. I have to "think" it through. First thought is "I wonder if T is on the team?".......doesn't sound like it, just sounds like she's lookin for shirts. Too bad, she'd have fun...although there is some pressure being on a sports team...usually they want you to be good at the sport...... they are so competitive. I remember being on a softball team, we called ourselves "Top Guns" (was in the 80's you know Tom Cruise, all the rage, yada, yada, yada) Anyway, we sucked. Didn't win one game. In fact I think we only played one game....against a team of PE coaches. They kicked our asses....we were laughing-stocks....we must have quit after that cause that's the only game I remember playing, and I think that was just a pre-season game. But I did keep the T-shirt for a long time....I think one of my kids still uses it as a sleep shirt.
Second thought is: Honey Badger? What's a Honey Badger? Is it different from a regular badger? Does it eat honey? Why'd they pick Honey Badger? Should I google Honey Badger? Did they have to pick animal names? Is that why they chose it? Why not choose something like Gladiators, Trojans, Top Guns.....something that inspires a little more fear? Honey Badgers? Are Badgers vicious? or wusses? Who picked this name? Did they come from some weird state like North Dakota? Somewhere where badgers are prolific? Do they have a fondness for badgers? Was it hard for them to talk their fellow teammates into embracing the name Honey Badger?''
FINE, just google it!
Ok, first thing that comes up is: Crazy Nastyass Honey Badger.....hmmm....maybe there is more to this than first glance. Next on google is "Honey Badger The Most Fearless Animal on the Planet"....wow, I have seriously underestimated the Honey Badger. I'm afraid to click any of these links cause I'm still at work...I mean come on....make sure the sound is down....I don't want to be caught surfing something I shouldn't...even if I am on my lunch break!
Ok, next reference appears to be from an episode of Glee....along with this little comment:
The Guinness Book of World Records has awarded the honey badger with the title "the most fearless animal in the world." In the National Geographic video below, we see the honey badger wrestle with creatures that would have us running back to our Jeep Wranglers screaming for Mommy. We're not entirely why Sue associates honey badgers with Terri Schuester (Jessalyn Gilsig) who finally returned to "Glee" tonight after a long absence, but we guess we'd classify both Terri and the honey badger as completely freaking crazy.
So I'll share this you tube video

Come on, if you can watch and listen to (this total gay guy) and get through this gay video.....ok, Honey Badger is Bad Ass....go ahead and name your volley ball team.
See why its so hard to be me?

The Winged Goddess of Victory?
In October Nike hosts the "Nike Women's Half Marathon" in San Francisco. It's a popular race, there are always more people who want to run than the course will allow. So registration is done on a "lottery" basis. Basically you sign up, but do not know if you have actually gotten in until several days after registration closes. Personally I prefer the "first come, first serve" basis (FCFS), those who are truly dedicated can sit poised at their keyboards at precisely the moment registration opens and she who clicks first wins.
One of the features of this particular race is that the medal you receive at the finish line is a special Tiffany necklace.......
One of the features of this particular race is that the medal you receive at the finish line is a special Tiffany necklace.......
Presented by:
Hot Tuxedo Clad Firemen:
Yummy! Nomnomnom...
How can any respectable woman resist? Rumor has it if you sign up as a team you increase your chance in the lottery because if one team member is chosen, you all are automatically in. So someone became the Team Captain, hereto referred to as TC. TC registered the team and received a "Team Number". That didn't mean we were in.....yet. Next step was during the open registration window April 11 thru April 22, all team members had to go online and register noting the team number during registration. TC sent us all an email on 4/11 reminding us registration was now open. Note that TC was vacationing in Hawaii at the time, but was so dedicated to the cause that she sent an email from the beach while drinking a mai tai....or pina colada...or some other exotic drink......work with me here.
Diligently we immediately started registering. Besides the usual questions like name, age, credit card number, Nike also wanted to know occupation, number of children, marital status, etc, these questions were optional, and since I'm always on the prowl for marketing ploys, I chose not to answer them.....as opposed to what I do sometimes when asked these intrusive marketing questions.....give ridiculous answers, like I make a million dollars, I have 10 children, yes they all still live at home, I drive a smart car, yes even on the freeway, etc....just my way of skewing the information so we don't all become the prey of fat cat corporate moguls. You can thank me later.
The most important part in the registration process was that we needed to enter the team number that TC had secured for us. She said Nike suggests you copy and paste the number so as not to make a mistake. I typed the number....and then I checked it,...again....and again, yep, it's right.....but if it's not right I may not get in, but the others will.....or worse.....everyone else doesn't get in and I do cause I put the wrong number. OK ALREADY! I'll copy and paste, there! A total 37 of us registered. And then the waiting began.....fingers crossed.
This morning I received an email from Nike Women's Marathon that started: "The Winged Goddess of Victory has spoken". My heart started to go pitter pat....VICTORY! We're in! Then it said something like of the 30,000+ entries we've drawn the names of the lucky women....WOOO HOOOO!!!! LUCKY US! WE ARE IN!.....keep reading....."unfortunately"....huh? Winged Goddess of Victory? Unfortunately? What? I must have read it wrong...."Unfortunately, your name was not one of them". WHAT? WHY? would "The Winged Goddess of Victory" send me a rejection letter?
Picture this: Last week, Nike headquarters (wherever that is, I'm too depressed to even google it...let's say down town New York), a glass enclosed conference room. The room is filled with high powered Nike executives. They are just firming up the details of the San Francisco run. At the head of the table is a smartly dressed, designer clad, beautiful woman...hereto referred to as Ms. Biatch or MB. MB is the mother of two young children who at this very moment are home being raised by their nanny au pair in upper east side Manhattan. MB paid tens of thousands of dollars to surrogates so as not to risk contamination of her svelte figure. She spends about 15 minutes in the evening with her children. Her husband is cheating on her.
MB says to send an email to all runners who made it in.....and let's say "The Winged Goddess of Victory" has spoken and they are in! Someone asks what should we do with the runners who did not make it in? MB says send them the same basic email but tweak it telling them unfortunately their name was not chosen.
Penny (her real name is Penelope, but everyone calls her Penny despite her objections), a rather plain looking secretary who could benefit from a make over, and couldn't afford a designer hand bag much less the outfit MB is wearing, is present to take notes. Penny looks up....should she say something? She asks quietly, "Do you think it's appropriate to send those who didn't get in an email saying "The Winged Goddess of Victory" has spoken?
A hush falls on the room. You could cut the air with a knife, ....hell you'd need a machete. MB turns to Penny and says "Just Do It (insert swoosh").
Gads....what if we didn't get in because I chose not to answer the survey questions??????
